Mesoamerica, September 21, 2021

This will be the second consecutive year in which Independence celebrations will again take place in a challenging context in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, but in line with safety protocols.

Belize became a British colony in 1840, known as British Honduras, and a Crown Colony in 1862. Under a new constitution, Britain granted British Honduras self-government in 1964. On June 1st  in 1973, British Honduras was officially renamed Belize. Independence was achieved from the United Kingdom on September 21, 1981.

The Excecutive Directorate of the Mesoamerica Integration and Development Project congratulates Belize, its Government and people, on this 40th Independence Anniversary: ¡Happy September 21th!
